Amtrak to Drop Pennsylvanian West of Pittsburgh

As a result of dropping express service, starting with the January 27, 2003 schedule change the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh-Chicago train back to its original New York-Philadelphia-Pittsburgh run. West of Pittsburgh, the route will still be served by the New York/Boston-Albany-Chicago "Lake Shore Limited" and the Washington-Chicago "Capitol Limited". However, those trains pass by at night. The current schedule, offered daylight service, but had a westbound Chigago arrival at 2:25 a.m. and an eastbound departure time of 1 a.m. The train only offered Horizon equipment which was uncomfortable, and offered no business or first class. The change will save Amtrak money.
The train like its counterpart the "Three Rivers" will be extended to New York, as it ran before 1998. The "Three Rivers" will continue to run its New York-Philadelphia-Pittsburgh-Akron-Chicago route. The NARP has asked for the train to be extended to Cleveland or Toledo, where there is space to store the train. The fate of the "Kentucky Cardinal" still remains uncertain.

Amtrak Cascades ridership up 3 percent- Trains Newswire

While in contrast to a slump in the Northwest's commercial aircraft business, ridership on Amtrak's Cascades Talgo trains grew 3 percent in 2002 to more than 577,000 passengers, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The agency attributes the increase in large part to stronger than usual ridership from January through May.

The Cascades serve the Interstate 5 corridor between Eugene, Ore., and Vancouver, B.C., including Seattle-Tacoma and Portland, Ore.
