Photos by David Hoge

David Hoge is a photographer working in Arkansas. After ten years in photojournalism (if you can call it journalism, more like low paid snapshooter), David left journalism, defeated, depressed and determined to find a new life.

On the the verge of selling his equipment, David began making trips to the Mena, Arkansas area to photograph Kansas City Southern trains in the mountains of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas.

Still not very serious about photography and certainly not worried about making a living with a camera, David continued over the next few years to photograph railroad related things. Things like trains and locomotives. Boxcars and signals.

By 2002 David became interested in the vanishing depots and other railroad structures in Arkansas. At least one depot was falling down or burning down each year. (A certain Presidential library in Little Rock demolished two railroad freight houses.) A snapshot project was started to snap a photo of each depot remaining in the state.

By the fall of 2002 a new project had developed. After a trip in north Arkansas, David began to wonder what the old abandoned right-of-ways looked like years after the last train had run.

In November the project was launched to photograph as much of the remains of the old railroads in Arkansas as possible.
