Overview

Afton Cyn is easily the hardest part to access along this subdivision. There are almost no paved roads leading to the tracks, in fact none that I can think of, and the dirt ones are often very sandy and therefore a hazard to get stuck in. There are at least 2 crossings of the Mojave River that must be managed and numerous other hazards to overcome. The bright side is that this is possible the most scenic of the subdivision as well, with high cliffs and deep gorges the main attraction.

I'm going to leave the narration here as I have only ever visited the Afton Cyn area from the park that sits adjacent to the west end. There is a neat bridge and a campground that would make an excellent base camp for exploring the canyon. 4x4's are a must from all that I have heard and read. So keep that in mind. I intend to try an explore this section of the sub in detail come this spring (04) before it gets too hot and after the days start to get a bit longer. I'll try and have more info then.

Access: The roads are all dirt after you leave I-15. I'll assume you are entering from the western entrance to the gorge, from the Afton Canyon exit # 219 off I-15. From the exit the road winds down to the campground and the on into the canyon. You'll have to cross the river immediately after passing the campground. This is as far as I have ever gone. I've never been in a vehicle I was confident could ford the water. I am really going to have to remedy that this spring. There is also access coming in from Kelso as well as from the Basin Rd exit off 1-15 #228. I haven't tried that way yet, but it is roughly 5.6 miles to the tracks. I don't know the condition of this road...yet.

Lodging: Yermo or Barstow are the only places you'll find anything decent to stay in. Again a campground at the west mouth of Afton is also available.
