One fall day in 1977 Denver Union Station had the look of the old days, with the stainless steel Rio Grande Zephyr sharing the platforms with an Armour Yellow passenger excursion.

Another road not long for the world in the late 1970s was the Rock Island. It still put on a good show, as here at LaSalle Street Station with a PV excursion.

Before Powder River coal, C&NW operations in Wyoming were pretty rustic. A couple of times a week they ran a short train out to Riverton, the western end of the line. In 1978 an eastbound headed back to Casper is leaving home rails and entering the BN's Wind River Canyon line. The Northwestern used the BN between Shoshoni and Casper.

Amtrak's first new equipment purchase back in the early 1970's was several of these French built turbine powered trainsets. They spent most of their lives running routes out of Chicago to Detroit, St. Louis, and Milwaukee.

The UP's deadline in 1976 Salt Lake City contained a bunch of interesting locomotives, including this 8500 HP gas turbine from the 1950s.
