not long for the world in the late 1970s was the Rock
Island. It still put on a good show, as here at LaSalle
Street Station with a PV excursion.
Powder River coal, C&NW operations in Wyoming were
pretty rustic. A couple of times a week they ran a short
train out to Riverton, the western end of the line. In 1978
an eastbound headed back to Casper is leaving home rails and
entering the BN's Wind River Canyon line. The Northwestern
used the BN between Shoshoni and Casper.
Amtrak's first new
equipment purchase back in the early 1970's was several of these
French built turbine powered trainsets. They spent most of their lives
running routes out of Chicago to Detroit, St. Louis, and Milwaukee.
The UP's deadline in
1976 Salt Lake City contained a bunch of interesting locomotives,
including this 8500 HP gas turbine from the 1950s.
