SD70 at Fields,Oregon high in the Cascades I have been fascinated by trains for almost my entire life. It started at a very young age, when my uncle owned a restaurant near the railyards in St. Louis. On one of our visits, my father took me across the road to watch the trains. I've been hooked ever since. While my interest dates back to the early 1950s, the train/photography combination didn't come together until the late 1970s when I began snapping the UP, BN and C&NW in central Wyoming. When I relocated to New York state in 1980 I discovered others with a similar interest, and my serious efforts date from that time. Throughout the 1980s and early 90s I travelled throughout the Northeast, South, Midwest, and Canada, with an occasional trip out west in search of rail action. In 1997 I moved again, this time to central Oregon. I was much taken with the beauty and action of the SP's rugged crossing of the Cascade Mountains, and acquired the "Cascade Bruce" nickname from the local fans. My philosophy of train photography is simple - I prefer to take a picture of a nice scene, that just happens to have a train in it. There are many fine rail photographers whose work has inspired me, foremost among them Richard Steinheimer and O. Winston Link. Beside taking pictures I also enjoy riding, and travel by rail whenever time and circumstances permit. Click on any of the links at left to view some of my photos from that time period.
