SIGNAL DEPARTMENT EMPLOYES

   1700. Signal Department Maintenance and Construction Employes report to and receive instructions from the Supervisor of Signals, his authorized representative, or other designated SIgnal Officer.

   1701. They will be responsible for the proper inspection, maintenance, and operation of all signalling in their charge, and shall do no work thereon that will delay or interfere with the safe passage of trains. They must know in advance they have sufficient time to complete all work affecting the movement of trains to avoid delay. They must not perform work which might interfere with the proper functioning of control machines or associated code apparatus without first notifying the Train Dispatcher.

   They will conform to the prescribed standards and plans in the execution of work in their charge.

   They will not make nor permit any changes or rearrangements in the signals, signal apparatus or signal controls without proper authority.

   They will not permit experimental trials of methods or appliances and devices nor give out information concerning results of same except as directed by the Supervisor of Signals.

   1702. They will be responsible for the safe, proper and economical use of material and apparatus, and of tools and machines. They will see that such property is properly stored and placed where the operation of trains or employes will not be endangered, and keep the premises in a neat and orderly condition.

   1703. They will be responsible for the safe and efficient performance of duties of their subordinates and know they are properly instructed in the performance of such duties.

   1704. Signal Foremen, Singnal Maintainers or other employes whose duties may affect train movements or require them to observe or be governed by train movements will comply with Rule 2 and will compare time as often as practicable with a standard clock, secure standard time by wire or telephone, or compare time daily with Conductor or Engineer.

   1705. They must provide themselves with the required flagging equipment and comply with Rules 1652 to 1655 inclusive, when conditions require.

   1706. They will not obstruct the track without proper protection.
