RAILNEWZ BY MARK;
RTA will purchase 18 new Freeway Flyer busses. Amtrak; June ridership up 8 percent. Revenues up 13 percent. Sales for the month totaled 102 million.

CLUB PICNIC;
The picnic this year will be held on Saturday, August 19th, the day after our club meeting. It will be held at Victory Park in Vermillion. This park is immediately South and adjacent to the former NYC/Conrail mainline. It is a very nice park. There is asphalt parking for many cars right along the tracks. The old Vermillion station is immediately adjacent but now appears to be used for part of a Catholic school. There is also plent of parking on Route 60 adjacent. The park has a large stand in the center, and has several grills and many picnic tables available. It also has a very pretty floral section. Route 60 crosses the tracks and there are crossing gates on each side. The lowering of these will give us advance notice of coming trains. Immediately on the other North side of the tracks is downtown Vermillion to which one can visit. It is a very pretty area. The railroad tracks are easily and quick accessible with plenty side area and one can see down the tracks in both ways making it easy to take photographs. The best way to get to Victory Park is to take freeway Route 90 which becomes freeway Route 2 West to the Route 60 interchange. There is a rest stop on Route 2 just before you get there. Its a mile or so drive North on Route 60 with a short jog in Vermillion and the park is immediately on the right. You can't miss it. The picnic will start at 2 PM and last until 6 PM. Our famous club chef, Bruce Young will begin grilling his famous hamburgers and hot dogs at about 3 PM, for which we wish to thank him. The club will provide the food including pop. However you are welcome to bring along any food you wish to share with the others. This is a new place for our picnic this year, and a longer drive than the previous place but it's well worth it.

HERE AND THERE;
On your club roster, which was sent along with the Bulletin last week please make the following address change. Douglas W. McClean has a new address as follows; 27097 Oakwood Circle, #107 "Z", Olmstead Falls, Ohio 44138. Same phone number (440) 235-2224. From member Bill Vigrass in New Jersey comes the following; "One item in the July bulletin rang a bell in my memory. The Rockport, Norwalk and Sandusky sounded familiar. I believe it was formed when I was in Lakewood High School in 1945-48. That was when HO guage ran on 6 volts DC. I occasionally attended meetings, but I stayed with "O" guage and 18 volts AC. I still have the same motor units and they run well on 12 volt DC." RTA's new buses will have upholstered high back seats that recline, individual reading lights and overhead storage racks, everything you need for long distance travel. But these busses will only take passengers to work. RTA trustees agreed to buy; 23 diesel "suburban coaches" to use on express routes between downtown and park and ride lots. The 40ft vehicles set a new standard of luxury for RTA. The fare will still be the same to ride these luxury busses but the price of each bus will be $367,090 apiece for a total of $8.44 million. That's $128,000 more per vehicle than the regular busses, 19 of which the RTA just ordered. The luxury busses will be on the road in about 6 months and the regular ones will join the fleet next summer. It is said that the new luxury busses will be a good deal because their stainless steel construction should keep them on the road for 20 years as opposed to the usual 12 years, and should be easier to maintain. The federal government will pay 80 percent of the cost of the new busses. On August 26th a special train will be operated from Canton, Ohio to the Lorain County Fair in Wellington. The train will back into the Orville branch to pick up passengers there. Train to leave Canton at 8 AM with expected time of arrival at fair at about 12 noon.
