-FEBRUARY-

PROGRAM - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16th, 2001
Dave McKay will give us another one of his great slide shows this evening. Part of it will consist of slides shot during Dave's many rail trips last year. Then Dave will have some "Golden Oldies" of older steam, diesel and electric lines and equipment. Also he will show us "Contrasts of Rochester". Dave recently paid a visit to his old hang outs in 1961 in Rochester and took new photos of the same locations. Some are rail, some are buildings, fire houses and locations. It will be interesting to see how things have changed in those many years.

OUT OF NOWHERE - Miscellaneous Ramblings (Have to fill this up with something!)
From the club Treasurer, Ron Leitch. The $5.00 service charge that Charter One put on our checking account for the return of checks, was cancelled and credit for $5.00 was given to our account. I will ultimately check out the combining of this account with that of our Dallar Bank Savings Account. I am in the process of putting together our Annual Year 2000 treasurers report for the club trustees audit. ALSO, DUES FOR THE YEAR 2001 ARE CURRENTLY PAYABLE, THE AMOUNT IS $10.00. You may send them directly to me, at 18707 Ferncliffe Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, 44135 by check made out to the Cleveland Railroad Club, or cash. So far 12 members have paid. Their receipts and membership cards will be included along with the current bulletin to save stamps. For the remainder of members who have not paid, an envelope for payment will be included with the bulletin. You add the stamp. You may also pay at the meeting for forwarding to me. *** Any members having articles or anything of interest for this bulletin send it to Ron Leitch, the editor. He will be glad to get it for inclusion in the bulletin. On the right is another great photo taken by Bill Kubis and submitted by his wife Joan. It was taken on the CSX tracks immediately behind their house. Besides Joan, his son Robert and daughter Meredith are shown. To take this great photo Bill stationed himself in the center of the mainline track with his camera while his family ran out in front of a coming fast CSX freight train to pose. Then Bill quickly snapped the photo and they all jumper out of the way of the train. It was quite a good shot and Bill had to use a 1/1000 of a second shutter speed. *** IN WASHINGTON, D.C. AMTRAK is seeking additional funds to close a "rail investment gap". It needs 30 billion dollars to modernize equipment, improve service and establish 11 high speed rail corridors. It was pointed out that the federal government now dedicates less than 1 percent of all transportation spending to intercity passenger rail. Under their plan that would grow over two decated to 2.5 percent. Amtrak President George Warrington stated "We intend to live from hand to mouth, from year to year, and thats no way to run a railroad." In 1997 congress ordered Amtrak to wean itself off of federal subsidies by 2003. Amtrak officials insist that the 1997 agreement was not meant to cutoff capitol assistance to by train cars and tracks. They contend it time for more Federal investment not less.
