Penn Central
Locomotive Photo Archive - the GP38

Web page recast by Jim Fuhrman, from an original developed by Jim Hebner
Jim Six researched the Penn Central roster of EMD GP38 locomotives and
with the help of Bob Grahm, Warren Calloway, and Tom Haagth, pieced
together a comprehensive roster of 280 PENN CENTRAL GP38s. Charted here is
a complete listing of all 280 Penn Central GP38s and their visual spotting
features, along with the 223 PC GP38-2 types. For the GP38s, there are are six different versions, determined by selections of controls, cab type, air filter and implementation of dynamic brakes.   None of the extended front versions are available as HO plastic models and would thus require kitbashing to represent..
The 7675-7737 series matches the old Atlas/Con-Cor GP38.
The three series in bold below are the group of those locomotives that the new Atlas factory painted PC GP38 matches.
The 7940-8162 series GP38-2 units can be modeled using the Athearn blue box kits.
