PORT PIRIE: Looking Back 1983 Season What should be a really good season of dirt circuit racing is about to commence this Sunday at the Port Germein Road tuck,Port Pirie. The Sporting Car Club of Port Pirie's season gets underway on Sunday 20th March amidst a multitude of changes. The most important thing to be changed is our style of racing, Previously we ran a series of point scoring scratch races, but this season, the club has decided to come into line with all of the other clubs in the association and will race on the handicap system. After round one for the day, which will be a scratch race affair, the cars will be handicapped for the next round. on their times. Winners will still race with the winners, seconds against seconds, and so on. If there needs to be an extra runner to make up the field, they will be chosen on a ballot system. To explain 'furthere a car that ran second, mabe ballotted into the winners round, but will enjoy whatever handicap his time allowed as will the various winners. It may eventuate that the ballotted runner being bought up, may be giving a slow winner a start. Once the cars in each heat bunch up there will be of neccessity a lot of passing attempts which will increase the spectacle of the day's racing. In addition to the handicap point scoring heats, a ten lap mass start scratch race in the reverse direction will also be held. The club will also be conduering special events from time to time. There will be a trophy for the fastest time of the day, which will give the faster cars something to shoot for, and the slower cars will all now come into contention for outright honors. The track will also be slightly changed for better racing when finances permit. Cars will all be eligible for a best presented trophy The club is always on the lookout for new members, both driving and non driving. Another advantage of the handicap system is that you can start with a fairly basic car and still be right in with a chance. Dirt circuit racing is not bash and crash, its a well condueted, fast and exciting sport, with high safety levels. Every car has to comply with the association's regulations, but these are not overwhelming. The feeling when you first drive out onto the track is one you'll remember for a while and never really leaves you, and the air conditioning is terrific. The club members are ever ready to give advice and help the newcomer to the sport. If you want to know more about it and don't know anybody in the ame, contact Dennis Amunten through Toyo, or Roger Davis at GTS4.. NEW CARS - There will be several new cars this Season, as I can think'of at least six without straining the grey matter and as such there are also several existing cars for sale at good prices. The club also has a beautification programme about to start and amongst other things we are seeking old playground equipment. Our general meetings are open to members, intending members, and interested people and will usually be held on the third Monday following the actual race day. These will also be advertised. So, on Sunday, all dirt circuit drivers and friends, and anybody looking for a good day's enjoyment, should be beading for the Port Germein Dirt Circuit Track ...
