"PICNIC AT BLACK ROCK" Sunday 2 July 2000 (with apologies to the award winning film 'Picnic at Hanging Rock') Following successful negotiations between Bluebird Rail, and Steamtown Peterborough, Port Dock Station is pleased to announce a special package tour from Adelaide to Peterborough using the remaining standard gauge Bluebird railcars, and then by a special narrow gauge steam hauled charter train to Black Rock and return. The standard gauge Bluebirds, which were to have left South Australia in May, for a new 'life' in the Hunter Valley region of NSW, w'ill now leave Adelaide in a few months time. So, a joint decision was made -why not use them for yet another 'final' run, but on this occasion heading north to Peterborough! Our train will depart from Great Southern Railway's Keswick Terminal, and run through the mid-north of the State, doing a 'right hand turn' at Crystal Brook and passing Gladstone and Jamestown, before arriving at Peterborough. After a short break, Steamtown's narrow gauge ex WA Railways steam engine W901 will chuff away from Peterborough; .heading our special train to historic Black Rock, crossing the 120 year old, sixty six span, heritage listed Black Rock bridge. Following a country-style BBQ lunch at Black Rock, and time to investigate the art gallery and coffee palace (originally the Hotel), we will return to Peterborough. to catch our fast express Bluebird back to Keswick- another record run maybe! Peterborough only passengers are most welcome to book on the Bluebird run, as the Bluey's have a greater capacity than the Steamtown special. And there are lots to do at Peterborough - lunch in one of the local Hotels, visit the Tourist Information Centre Train Carriage, and a tour of Steamtown's loco depot and roundhouse.
