ERIE - LACKAWANNA MERGER STUDY

APPENDIX A

Waybill Analysis

Studies I, Common Points; II, Duplicate Lines; IV, Carload Freight - Effect of Rerouting Freight Traffic; V, Carload Freight Longer Hauls; 1, Foreign Line Freight Charges on Company Material; and XIII, Effect of Merger on System@ Freight Revenues, all involve carload freight traffic and require estimates of the amount of traffic gained, lost or rerouted. The two roads involved in the merger handled over 1,750,000 cars in 1956 and the task of complete analysis was obviously impractical.

Studies were made of the movements of principal commodities over each road for the twelve month period November, 1955, through October, 1956. The studies disclosed that October, 1956, could properly be considered a typical month.

Cards were cut for this month showing the information needed for the various studies and statements were then prepared as required for each study. The results obtained from the analysis of the statements were expanded to represent annual estimates by multiplying by the appropriate factors.

The cars studied are shown below. The only local cars analyzed were those which moved within the study area. All Erie cars handled wholly west of Buffalo and Hornell were omitted.
