A typical BNSF dispatching work station in the NOC

The walls are about 5 feet high and are lined with a sound-absorbing material. In some cases, the far wall contains an opening sort of like a "window", which allows dispatchers on adjoining territories to communicate with one another without having to stand on tip-toes or shout over the walls.

Note the row of computer monitors and the 3 keyboards and computer mice -- each of which operates a different system. Almost every dispatching desk is arranged in this manner. The computer screen which sits on the desktop is a Penta screen... this is the radio system most of the former BN dispatchers use. It is a touch-screen system, meaning you simply touch the name of the radio or intercom you want to use.
