Program 110
Railway Supply Association's Expo '96 / LaGrange, Illinois Hot Spot

The Railway Supply Association conduct an exposition for the railroad industry every year. However, it only conducts its outdoor expo every four years. For 1996, the outdoor expo attracted manufactures like General Motors, General Electric, MK Rail, and Johnstown America. Rolling stock and prototype equipment from Conrail, Union Pacific, Amtrak, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe were on display at BNSF's 14th St. Metra maintenance facility.

The exhibits and displays are closed to the public. However Trackside cameras were allowed inside. Host Dave Reed visits with factory representatives as they tell about the latest innovations in the railroad industry.

Videotaped in September 1996.

In LaGrange, Illinois, north of the huge Electro Motive locomotive plant, Burlington Northern Santa Fe's triple track raceway between Chicago and Aurora, Illinois crosses Indiana Harbor Belt's line from Argo, Illinois to points north. This is one of the busiest Hot Spot segments we have visited to date and in several instances, several train movements are occurring at once. Also included is a classic "Train running over the camera" shot taken from between the rails.

Videotaped in October 1996.

Once every four years the Railway Supply Association conducts an outdoor Expo where manufacturers from the industry can display their latest and greatest products.

The display area was located in the shadow of the Sears Tower, at Burlington Northern Santa Fe's 14th Street Metra maintenance facility.

Dave gets a case of sticker shock as he checks out Union Pacific SD90MAC #8160, on display at the Electro Motive booth. EMD also showed a brand new Conrail SD80MAC and a BNSF SD70MAC.

The SD90MAC's distinctive roofline is quite apparent here.

GE also had a new Amtrak Genesis passenger locomotive on display as well.

One of several Caterpillar products on display was this locomotive for the Peoria & Pekin Union Railroad.

Electric Transport of America was showing this little two-axle, 500 horsepower industrial switcher constructed in Yugoslavia.

Here's one of the GE Amtrak units on the job passing through LaGrange, Illinois over BNSF trackage. Everyday the Southwest Chief, California Zephyr and Illinois Zephyr all pass through LaGrange.
