CASTLE VALLEY
RY

The Castle Valley RY was incorperated in 1901. The twenty mile line was built from the Rio Grande tracks in Salina, up Salina Canyon to the coal mine at Nioche. After maybe one load of coal was hauled on the line, the US government stepped in and stopped the operation. It seems that the proper papers were not filed for the mining operation. The line was merged into the Rio Grande in 1908.

Prior to the building of I 70 through the canyon, the road was known as Utah 10 which ran from Price to Salina. A lot of the ROW and tunnels were visable from the highway.
