ROAD TRIP
DAY 2

Day 2, Sunday, 03/25/01

RING!! What is that noise? RING!! Where am I?? RING!! Darn, the telephone. Must be my wakeup call. 0500 and time to hit it. 0530 and ready to go. Only problem is I told David 0600. Run over to the Chevron and grab some gas, ice and a cup of coffee. Get back to motel and pick up David. Head for Helper Yard to listen to the early morning sounds and maybe catch some action. Finish coffee and check out Martin Yard. Nothing. Head for Wildcat Loadout. Bare. Where are all the Utah coal trains??? Head for CV Spur. Same thing. Hmmm. Hope this is not a sign of things to come. Time for a little B&G at the local greasy spoon.

Missed the #6 so head back to Helper. Still nothing going on. Decide to head up the hill and see if we can catch anything. Get to Colton and find a UP coal getting ready to head to Skyline. David wants to catch the loadout so head for Scofield and beyond. Get to Skyline with time to spare so check out Clear Creek then the Skyline Mine. Get back to the loadout in time for David to get a lot of pictures. After about 45 minutes head back down the hill.

Get all the way back to helper with no sound on the scanner. Time to do some sight seeing for a while. Grab lunch then head south to Columbia and beyond. Head back to Helper around 1500 and hope to find something. Been a real bad day for trains. Hmmmm. What is that funny noise coming out of the scanner speaker. A west bound BNSF "M" heading into Helper. David is finally going to get the chance to chase something today.

BNSF "M" leaving Helper.

BNSF at Kyune.

We are finally getting some good light and David is getting a lot of pictures. Chase the "M" over the hill and wait at Gilully. David is happy with all the good shots he gets. Head back over the hill to Helper and catch a UP coal heading to CV Spur for loadout. Has been a real slow day.

UP coal empty heading to CV Spur.

UP coal empty

Starting to get dark so decide to head for beans. Just hope Monday is better than it was today. Still can't believe that no Utah coal trains have run in two days.
