Amtrak, or National Railroad Passenger Corporation, runs all passenger trains in the United States except for commuter trains and, of course, tourist operations. Amtrak was formed in 1971 to relieve the railroads from having to run passenger trains. The backbone of Amtrak's Intercity car fleet are the Superliner cars in various configurations. General Motors F40PH locomotive was for a long time the most common diesel locomotive but for now the General Electric P42 holds the title. Amtrak operates several fine long distance trains, among them the Coast Starlight which operates between Los Angeles, CA, and Seattle, WA. Several of Amtrak's routes are very scenic with views of everything from oceans to mountains. This section also includes equipment owned by California Department of Transportation, CDTX, lettered for Amtrak California. To view
