| Caltrain
is the commuter service between San Francisco, San Jose and Gilroy
operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board. The locomotives
and cars are lettered for California Department of Transportation,
CDTX. The operation dates from 1863 when the San Francisco & San
Jose Railroad began service between San Francisco and Mayfield, service
to San Jose began in 1864. The railroad was absorbed by Southern Pacific
in 1870. Caltrans assumed responsibility for the Peninsula Commute
Service in 1980 and in 1991 the Peninsula Study Joint Powers Board
was formed, the latter becomes the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers
Board, JPB, in 1992, the same year as the service was extended to
Gilroy. This brings us to todays operation. The JPB hired Amtrak as
operator for the service. The Caltrain locomotives are EMD F40PH-2's
and F40PH-2C's from Boise Locomotive, the cars are bi-level gallery
cars as they have been since 1955. |
