Canadian National is the largest railroad in Canada and was previously owned by the Canadian government but privatized in November of 1995. CN recently merged with Illinois Central, IC, and thus CN locomotives can be seen in the United States also. The mainline through the Rockies follows an easier route than rival CP's, but it is just as scenic. The mainline goes through the Thompson and Fraser River Canyons which are operated jointly by CP and CN as a doubletrack with westbounds using CN and eastbounds CP. VIA Rail Canada operates mostly on CN.
