Chicago & Northwestern was one of two railroad companies to build in to the Powder River area in Wyoming, the other was BN. The increase in traffic prompted the CNW to buy new locomotives and General Electric was the manufacturer of choice and C40-8, C44-9W and C44-AC was the models CNW bought. This put CNW in the then fairly small "AC-camp" among railroads. You can still find CNW painted units on the road and UP's purchase of CNW resulted in these units being send all over UP's system. Chicago & Northwestern also ran a superb commuter operation in Chicago and was one of few railroads in North America that had left hand running.
