The Grand Canyon Railway is an amazing rust-to-resurgence story. Two ambitious developers purchased the 64 mile branch line between Williams and Grand Canyon, Arizona, from the Santa Fe in 1989 and restored track that had been out of service for 20 years. They bought and upgraded passenger cars and renovated steam locomotives. Amtrak's Southwest Chief stops at Williams Junction where the GCRY offers a free shuttle service to it's station in Williams for an easy connection to the GCRY's daily train to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The railway operates three steam locomotives, an A-B-A set of Alco-MLW FP4 diesels and passenger cars, including heritage dome cars. The trip not only offers a relaxing and scenic way to and from the Grand Canyon but also includes entertainment in the form of music and a train robbery!
