America Needs a Balanced Transportation System

• Modern Passenger Trains: A National Necessity

  "Federal investment to modernize the nation’s rail system will return substantial public benefits in a relatively short time. Investment in rail will add needed transportation capacity, provide high quality transportation choices, stimulate significant technological advances, increase energy efficiency, save human lives and reduce the negative impact that the growing demand for transportation has on air quality and the environment."

  This report released by the National Association of Railroad Passengers in June 2002 is available from its Web Site in two versions, a short Executive summary (21 KB) and the Full plan (356 KB). Both versions are in PDF format, requiring the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader.

• Transportation is the unacknowledged crisis in the Granite State
   (February 4, 2002 - Union Leader) Please note there are two corrections:

  • Dennis Dizoglio quoted a figure of 140,000 rail passengers daily not 14,000.
  • The Texas study stated that traffic congestion costs $78 billion annually not the cost of transportation being $78 billion.

Northern New England High Speed Rail Corridor 

• Resolved: That the NH Railroad Revitalization Association go on the record as urging that Gov. Shaheen take appropriate action to "freeze" any further removal or destruction of infrastructure along the Northern Railroad (Concord-WRJct) until that line, as a portion of the former Boston/Montreal Corridor, has been studied and it is determined that it has no place in the region's transportation mix. [Passed by unanimous vote at NHRRA meeting on 9/24/01]
• BURLINGTON TO BOSTON DESIGNATED AS HIGH SPEED RAIL LINE
• Boston to Montreal High Speed Rail Study
  A website has been developed as part of a public outreach campaign to generate interest and identify issues for high speed rail service. The site includes an overview of high speed rail, a description of the corridor, links to other related sites and an up-to-date schedule of the Phase I activities, including future meeting dates.

Hillsborough Branch 2001 Rail Survey

Over the past year and a half, New Hampshire Railroad Revitalization Association members Tom Greenman and Ron Wood have been researching and conducting a survey of the State of NH owned portion of the Hillsborough Branch from Wilton, NH to Bennington, NH. During the course of this survey, over twenty (20) companies through out the Souhegan Valley area were contacted in regards to their view on rail. Specifically, whether they would use rail service or support the restoration of rail service either freight or tourist passenger on the Hillsborough line.
