There is a huge (or is it merely enormous?) tie replacement project progressing westward. When I shot these photos, as well as those on pages 4 and 5, trains were backed up 4 deep at times waiting to get through the work area. When I rushed from Maine to Williams Junction to catch the NS unit and its various Heritage peers, I didn't know how big the delays were.
The recent snows had turned all the access and forest ranger roads into potential quagmires. I wasn't eager to bury my Jeep in the soup and suffer the humiliation of needing a tow out of the muddy - snowy soup. So I walked as far as I could but could not reach the spot I wanted.
The NS train did show up about 9 minutes after I expected it - with another west bound creeping along beside it. Both mains were filled with west bound container trains. But first an eastbound and a westbound came by, including one with an NS unit, and another with various vintage BNSF paint treatments....
