CP Rail Lyndonville Subdivision

Chasing 917 north from St. Johnsbury, Vermont in 1985.

Story and photos: Phil Mason

Stan Smaill, John Garden and myself followed CP train 917 in the fall of 1985 from St.Johnsbury to Barton VT.

This event was significant because train 917 usually made the journey at night,
but due to planned track work, the train operated in daylight.

These images show train 917 arriving at St.Johnsbury from Wells River, the CP and B&M cabooses
on the tail end of this train, and the train departing St.Johnsbury next to a pond or river.

Running Extra now. Proof that Vermont is scenic!

Smoking it up like a good ole' Alco! North Burke, with Adirondack Mountains in background.

ABS signals at Summit mile 21.6. Note: Letter A on main signal and dwarf signal indicates Absolute stop.

Barton, Vermont

Wells River was simply a CP ABS signal and a large section house by 1985.

On the B&M north of White River Junction but south of Wells River is this nicely restored station at Bradford VT.
