SEPTA Lansdale Station February 12 2006

Spring arrives tomorrow afternoon, so it is almost safe enough to look back on the winter of 2006. The major snowfall in the area, dubbed the Blizzard of 2006, hit just before Valentine's Day on February 11 2006. While record snowfall of 27" was recorded in New York's Central Park, Philadelphia and its suburbs got anywhere between 12" and 21". Despite the inclement weather, for the most part, SEPTA's Regional Rails kept on rolling, albeit with complications.

SEPTA Train 2550 arrives in Lansdale with trailing Silverliner IV 350's pilot packed with snow.

Turning at Doylestown as Train 2551, all that snow on the leader 350 now causes problems.
Seems that the snow has been packed into and around the horn, rendering it almost useless. At Lansdale Station, the engineer tries to resuscitate 350's muted horn with a flare.
A valiant effort, but unsuccessful. And as 2551 passed the Lansdale watchtower ......
... the audible warning at grade crossings is provided by the third unit, activated by the conductor who has the unenviable job of hanging out the window to see when to blow.
As the train snakes through Dale Interlocking, one must imagine it must have been a very long and cold trip to Malvern for the conductor this winter day.
