[TrainWeb Editor's Note: The owners of TrainWeb.com had planned to build a Disneyland-style railroad theme park in La Plata, Missouri, called the "Silver Rails Resort". This would be the centerpiece of many railroad related attractions all through the region around La Plata and this region would be called "Silver Rails Country". However, due to the economic downturn of 2008, this project had to be abandoned. Some, but not all of the below venues no longer exist. La Plata Rail Related Venues:

Located in the heart of Silver Rails Country, it is themed after an 1800's railroad depot and is decorated with many historic railroad artifacts making the hotel a small railroad museum in and of itself! For a few years, this hotel was owned by the owners of TrainWeb.com. It was sold to new owners a few years ago. It had been planned to be a component of the "Silver Rails Resort".

3. APRHF Silver Rails Gallery (CLOSED)  -  (Photos) Significant works of railroad art featuring paintings, photographs, three-dimensional works, poetry, literature, artifacts, multimedia works, and more plus a railroad gift shop. Temporarily closed during relocation.


4. APRHF Silver Rails Memorial Library (CLOSED) Books, journals, videos, and other media related to railroads. Though all aspects of railroads are featured, the library has a particular emphasis on passenger rail heritage. The library has one of the largest collections of books and videos related to Amtrak and the history of Amtrak. Many are very rare volumes that are difficult to find anywhere else. Temporarily closed during relocation.


5. APRHF Rail Lookout Cabin & Deck (OPEN)  -  (Photos) [1 min], at the end of the road behind the Mexican Restaurant . All weather heated train observation cabin & deck overlooking the BNSF transcontinental mainline. Includes free WiFi, electric outlets, BBQ and outhouses. Atlanta Conservation Area (OPEN)  -  (Photos) [25 min], 5 miles north of Macon on Hwy 63, 2 miles west on Route AX, then 2.5 miles north on Jupiter Ave., Hunting: deer, dove, quail, rabbit, squirrel, turkey, waterfowl, Fishing: bass, catfish, and sunfish, firearms range and fishable ponds, individual campsites, walk-in, float-in, backpack-in camping, boat ramp, bird watching.


94. Thomas Hill Conservation Area (OPEN) [51 min], Main entrance is 5.25 miles west of Macon on Highway 36, then 10 miles south on Route C to College Mound, and 2.4 miles west on Route T, Campground, boat ramps, boat docks, picnic areas, a fishing jetty, and 4,950 acres of fishable water. The area also has a waterfowl refuge north of Route T and upland hunting on several thousand acres. A heated water discharge canal offers unique winter fishing opportunities.
