CAB RIDE ON SF 2952 AT EMPORIA, KS

My friend and I are riding Santa Fe 2952 (a GP35) at the Emporia Yard in July 1997.  The BNSF 2540 "Pumpkin" is to our right in front of us.  The Emporia depot is to our left.  We had an hour long cab ride in the yard.  It was fun!! Photo by Eric Burris.

(LEFT) Here's the BNSF signs as seen from South Avenue in July 1997.  The top one is a Santa Fe Goodhousekeeping award.  The bottom one is a BN-SF injury free award.  The switch stand on the left has a BNSF logo on it.

BN 9478 AT EMPORIA, KS

BN 9478 (an SD70MAC) and a GP9 move around the east end of the Emporia Yard in July 1997.  The Green & Creme  BNs (SD70MACs)don't make very many appearances around the Emporia sub.  They are used mostly for coal trains on the Bn lines.  The "MAC" means modern cab and alternating current traction motors.  AC traction motors work perfectly for hauling heavy coal trains without burning up the traction motors. The traction motors are on the wheels on the locomotive trucks.  Photo by Eric Burris.

BNSF 2540 AT EMORIA , KS

BNSF 2540 was the first SF engine to be painted Pumpkin colors and is a GP35.  2540 was the switch engine at the Emporia Yard for a whole month in July 1997.  She sure was fun to look at an ride.  One of the guys I know let me ride it from the Bunge Elevator all the to the yard.  I got to adjust the throttle and blow the horn.  Until the engineer took over to slow the train down to stop in the yard.  Photo by Eric Burris.
